Macchiato No. 44 // A Shot of UX with a Dollop of Graphic Design

Salve, readers! Please try out some of the Sketch plugins I listed in today’s macchiato. Hope you’re able to find some time to watch a design video too!

  • As designers, we often create multiple compositions of a page layout to show clients. Photoshop has “Layer comps” but as Sketch is becoming the UX standard, what’s the equivalent? This Sketch plugin, States of the artboard, is similar! It helps create different states, manage them, and switch between them easily.
  • Virtual reality isn’t a new thing; the technology has evolved and dates as far back as the early 1800s. The design principles behind the Stereoscope (invented by Sir Charles Wheatstone in 1838) are still used today in Google Cardboard and in low-budget VR-mounted displays for mobile devices. There is now a Sketch plugin, Sketch to VR, that will turn your visuals into VR. The exports of your Sketch file will be used to run A-Frame, an open-source Web VR library.
  • Having a style guide on a project has helped both designers and developers at WillowTree tremendously. It provides guidance to create consistency. A neat plugin that could help with organizing colors is Prism. It’s a Sketch plugin that creates a color palette based on the document’s colors and exports them using various formats.
  • We have all designed forms at some point. Here are guidelines of common dos and don’ts in form design - Design Better Forms: Common mistakes designers make and how to fix them.

  • Do you remember that documentary about a certain typeface, graphic design, and global visual culture? The one probably 99% of all designers have seen? Helvetica! Well, here’s a treat: I found a curated list of must-see documentaries for designers and artists - Designers:Watch.
  • The computer revolutionized the way the graphic design industry works (considering designers used to hand-construct pages). Graphic Means is a documentary, currently in production, that will explore graphic design production of the 1950s through the 1990s.
  • The 8 lessons in How Steven Spielberg can make you a better UX designer will not only make you a better UX designer, they will make you a better film director too.

  • Design content-first: Content is UX. Lorem Ipsum fills available space but it’s meaningless and lacks context. When you place content as the top priority over every other aspect in the design process, it may influence the overall efficiency of a project. @ttabilas.
